David Bartlam ![]() 28th Aug 2013 23:10:16 | I'd just like to say a huge thank you to the 87 individual pilots that we had join the session this evening! Between 1930 and 2230, to have 87 individual pilots join the session is just fantastic. As fantastic as it was, I need to point out a few things.
We had a fair few individuals join the session who gave me (the controller) a huge issue. There were 3 people that were being abusive on the Chatbox. Why? That's simple. I had 17 pilots to control, that's from ground clearances to arrivals, circuits to emergencies.. For any controller, regardless of experience, it's extremely stressful and difficult to control that many people at one time. Now, whilst controlling, and although I ticked the "Kick spawners" box, I was still getting people spawn on my runway and fly into controlled airspace. Now, at the time, with 16 pilots on Teamspeak, its very loud and time consuming! Kicking these people takes time. But when I saw one certain person make a comment on the chat, I had to reply. He was kicked several times for the reasons mentioned above. Yet when I asked him to join Teamspeak, I received a barrage of abuse "You're a **** controller, you should be able to deal with it, Im talking to you in here so that should be okay"... Firstly, Pilots and controllers do not communicate via text message, they talk through radios. Secondly, I'm more than capable of dealing with that amount of traffic, when they are on Teamspeak! I don't expect to be getting abuse on a chat box. I might add here it also clearly states in our auto message that we use Teamspeak 3 and that it is required to fly on our session The reason Ive posted this here is because I want to make the users out there realise and understand that the sessions use Teamspeak for a reason. The address is one the same page that you see our IP address on this website so their isnt an excuse for the verbal bashing that was received today. For anyone that has experienced a large amount of traffic when controlling, I'd like to think you can relate to it. For those that havent, all you have to think about is getting your clearance and listening to one voice, the controllers. A controller not only has to give EVERYONE their clearance, they have to monitor the air, the runways, the pilots, their headings, their altitudes, whether their gear is up or down before landing, terrain etc.. We have alot more to think about!! The moral of the story... Just use the communications that the server hosts asks you to use. It's not hard. It takes 5 minutes to install and 1 click to get onto a server via the FSOpen page! Spare a thought for the guys you are abusing! They;re not ****, they are stressed and have enough on their plate to worry about without getting idiots arguing with them! The reason they were not kicked/banned was simply because I want people to come on and enjoy our sessions and of course, the events we host. I have the patience of a saint! Unfortunately, that doesn't go in my favour sometimes |

Stefan Schertenleib 29th Aug 2013 15:14:28 | Hi David
I think that you ATC controllers are doing a great job! If it wasn't for you guys, online flying wouldn't be as much fun as it is with manned ATC! I can just imagine how busy it is with looking after 87 individual pilots! Great Job guys! |
David Bartlam ![]() 29th Aug 2013 15:21:18 | Stefan, Thanks for the kind words. The controllers enjoy getting the good feedback,
We had 87 pilots throughout the duration of the event (3 hours), the most I had in my control at one time was 17, which for one controller, is still a lot of work. :) |
