Server hosting computer

Hi there

I have my own computer which I use for Flight Sim but I know that to host FSOpen Server, you can't use the same computer.

What sort of computer do you guys run your servers on? I'm considering setting up a session of my own so doing a little bit of research as I will need to get another desktop.

Many thanks

David,

Not strictly true. You can run FSOpen Sever on the same PC that you are flying/controlling from ,however, the BOT function must be disabled as it becomes an annoyance with it popping up every few mins.

Another problem with hosting from the machine you fly/control from is also that you are limited to what you as a player can do. You cant change plane without coming out of the session which in turn boots everyone else out ect.

In terms of computer specs, in my opinion just above the minimum requirements for FSX which are online somewhere or on the back of your FSX CD Case. The server is purely there to handle the connected players data. You don't need to have the graphics on high. There's no point. There are some previous forum posts where people have explained what specs their servers have. Just have a flick through the pages.

The most important part to running a server is the internet connection. With quite a bit of data, especially when FSOpen Server is running, coming to and from your router you need to have a decent connection speed to still leave you and who ever else uses your network, enough bandwidth to do what ever you do normally without being affected.

Following up on Joe's good comments. For several years I hosted with a second machine...low end XP, with 4 Gig of ram, and a pretty low end graphic card... on a 4Mbit up/70Kbit down WIFI. At times I even used my pretty generic laptop. This worked "ok" with generic default FSX aircraft and scenery.

Now days... with so much improvement on 3rd party add ons... I currently host with a Win7, I3cpu, 8gb ram, and standard on board graphics card. This machine is now in a rack at my IP as a "co-locate" arrangement. I have 600Mbit down/400 Mbit up. I fly from home on my normal PC.

As you can see there is a wide range between the two. It really depends on what kind of session... what aircraft.. .. type of add ons... and how many players you expect... etc.

Hope this gives you some idea of what type a machine you may need. Just remember it will only be handling you traffic.. so it doesn't' need to be a high dollar gamer machine.

Hi Joe... Yea I've noticed that it keeps popping up which is rather annoying. Need the bot on though so will definitely be getting another dedicated machine.

Thank you also Curley.

I've just created a session which is now pro and listed from my home computer. It just means that I wont be able to fly until I get a dedicated server, which is fine by me.

I'll just get a low end computer which will run it adequately. I've just ordered fibre optic broadband aswell so that will take care of the bandwidth. Do you have any additional cooling system installed? Does the computer overheat or is it okay with hosting 24/7?

Thank you for your replies guys

As my server (PC) is located in the "rack" and in an isolated "cool room" at my IP... there are only stock fans. Also FYI.. no monitor... I remote control the server from my house. It took me over a year to make these particular arrangements with this IP. I assume with this being in your home.. you might consider extra cooling depending on the machine you purchase.
