Packet Counts

Just a little quick blurb that I wanted to recommend for a future update for FSOpen. In large FSX servers, packet counts are the key to everyone having a uniform, lag-free experience. If a user is flying a packet-flooding aircraft, more often than not, it dampers the experience of others by creating lag or application crashes.

With FSOpen, admins have the ability to see these packet counts. But since there is no !p or !packet command for the normal user, would there be a way of adding packet counts to the plug-in/display module that is put on our websites?

We want users to be able to check their packets, yet still be able to cockpit share if the server is empty. It would help our operations greatly and would allow us to better structure our in-game admin listings.

Thanks for your taking the time to read this thread,

Jake explains this packet information need and proposed use clearly. May I add this question to the FSOpen community: Those of you that run the more populated FSX-FSOpen servers, what are your opinions on Jake's proposals and your own communities needs for such packet information?

Dave Wave, can you comment here or in an email to us your thoughts on this packet information request? The information in the column "Max Packets" seems to hold the maximum packets ever drawn by an individual user. More useful maximum packets information would be to capture the maximum packet count on the LAST packet counting cycle or maybe the last 4 packet cycles. Often the FSX effects triggered by third party aircraft require vastly increased packets served than the normal operation of this same aircraft. Currently, Max Packets column only displays the worst that this user has pulled since that user's logon.

Also, see comments on this packet info topic under David Figge's "ban command" thread here in the FSOpen forum.

I'm adding it to !packet, if you're not an admin it will show the last 30 second count and the maximum in a 30 second period since a user has been connected.

If you are an admin it will list as usual.

Thank you, Dave. We do appreciate your efforts in this packet information availability to our general membership. In conversations with other FSX-FSOpen host administrators, I do believe all of us in the wider FSX multi world will benifit from your good works here.

Respects, Bob...
